MY LATEST PHOTOSHOOT: WEATHER PERMITTING

Family

My most recent photoshoot was in rainy weather, living in the UK we  cannot guarantee that every photoshoot will have warm summer sunshine  and backlit sunsets, Nor does it need to.

Booking in advance can be  nerve-racking with the British weather playing its part. Leading up to the  shoot I will keep a close eye on the forecast, but as you know it is not  always reliable.

At my most recent photoshoot, the weather was overcast  when I arrived at the location and there was a rather thick layer of fog and  then it started to lightly rain. Panic kicked in, it can go either way, luckily in  the end it was in my favour. This kind of weather might have put some  people off … not this family! My client was open to the idea of continuing  with the photoshoot. It was magical.

When photographing in rainy  weather, there are several obvious difficulties, including the risk of  moisture damage to your equipment, you and clients getting wet and the  list can go on. With this in mind, I can imagine it will put you off, although  we might think rainy weather is dull, rain is the perfect way to add  emotion, drama, a sense of motion and even excitement into a  photograph.

You know the saying – life is about learning to dance in the  rain.

We made the best of the situation and it turned out better than I  could imagine. From the moment I met my clients, there was this  connection, and I could feel they trusted me. They were affectionate  towards each other and it was a joy to photograph them. I wanted to share  this session because it demonstrates perfectly how relaxing, playful a  photoshoot can be and whilst focusing on each other and the clothes you  choose are more important for beautiful photographs than sunsets and  warm weather.

These photographs are full of emotion and depth using  earthy colours – I love them. I remember sitting in my car after the shoot,  being in disbelief, experiencing this moment with my clients was priceless.  I will share with you photographs of the shoot and you can decide for  yourself.

Next time you have a photoshoot and it looks like it will rain, trust  your photographer and wait before you decide to cancel. You may be  postponing the most magical “Once in a lifetime” moment.

What Do My Family Photoshoots Look Like?

Before my family photography sessions, I go over a list of shoot ideas and envision them,  but I’ve learnt that things don’t always go as planned. I have experienced a busy toddler who doesn’t want to cuddle or play games, then all plans go out of the window.

Over time I have found ways that work for me in every session to get emotive and candid images and how to help families feel relaxed and their best selves.

So, what do my family photoshoots look like? Keep on reading!
