Why you need a Maternity Photoshoot

Tips & ideas

Pregnancy is such a magical, life-changing thing. Every day brings new experiences – some good and others not so good – that your body naturally knows how to support your growing baby.

A beautiful new baby is in your arms before you know it since it goes by so quickly. In order to keep this special moment forever, having professional maternity photos taken is a wonderful idea.

This way, you can look back and remember how wonderful it felt to be carrying your baby, and when your child is old enough to understand it, you can show them how they looked inside your tummy.

Here is why you need a maternity photoshoot.

First, how far along in your pregnancy should you be for maternity photos?

I generally advise taking your maternity photos between 30 and 36 weeks. As your belly will be nice and round at this stage, but not so much that you feel overly fatigued and uncomfortable. Having your maternity session at this time will create the most flattering photos.

A professional maternity photoshoot can be a fun way to reveal your pregnancy! You can share the images on social media and with your family. Print them on cards to surprise your family and frame them on the walls of your home.

You will miss your bump

Believe it or not, you will miss your bump! You have probably complained to everyone you know about your sore back, restless nights, and frequent heartburn.

But you will definitely miss the bump and as the months go by and your baby begins to crawl, you will find yourself looking through your maternity photos.

The reality is, while pregnancy can be hard, there is something simultaneously magical about it. You are creating a new life, and your baby is solely dependent on you. You can feel every fist bump, kick, and headbutt they give you in the ribs.

You will feel beautiful

At the end of the day, you realise the wonderful truth that you are growing a human, and that alone is cause for celebration. Dressing in a way that highlights your bump, applying makeup, and treating yourself to a manicure, or a photography session may be just the thing.

Dressing comfortably is so important to feel beautiful in your skin. My client wardrobe is full of lovely, flowy dresses that fit and suit all body types. This is something I value – women feeling good.

Strengthen your relationship

Due to mood swings and the anticipated change in lifestyle, being pregnant can occasionally create tension in a relationship. You need to find a way to look beyond the immediate difficulties you are facing in order to focus on the bigger picture.

Together with your partner, you can celebrate the new life you are bringing into the world and enhance your relationship by taking maternity photos. It will be your last opportunity to capture how your relationship is evolving as a couple into a family.

Having maternity photos taken can create a strong emotional connection between new fathers and their growing babies. Helping your partner bond with your baby will also help you both re-establish your connection.

Look back on the photos as your child grows

Time starts to fly by the moment your newborn arrives.

You are going to miss the easygoing times of pregnancy when you weren’t constantly checking the nappy bag or wipes whenever you went shopping.

You will probably start remembering your pregnancy and how peaceful the house was when your child gets older. Your pregnancy images will serve as a priceless glimpse into the past, and you will appreciate looking back on how you carried such a tiny human growing inside you.

For your kids to look back on

When they are older, your kids will appreciate seeing these images as well. They will like seeing how beautiful their mother was while you were carrying them.

It is the first huge milestone

Whether this is your first or last child, chances are they will be interested in the concept that they grew inside of you! It’s such a sweet way to show them where it all started by showing them maternity photos of your bump.

Capture the first big milestone of their life, for you and them to appreciate in years to come.

They will be treasured forever

You can give your child a peek at a world they will never be able to see for themselves by having maternity photos taken: the time their parents spent together before they were born.

They will see how excited you were for their arrival.

What Do My Family Photoshoots Look Like?

Before my family photography sessions, I go over a list of shoot ideas and envision them,  but I’ve learnt that things don’t always go as planned. I have experienced a busy toddler who doesn’t want to cuddle or play games, then all plans go out of the window.

Over time I have found ways that work for me in every session to get emotive and candid images and how to help families feel relaxed and their best selves.
